Social media might as well be the biggest things since sliced bread and Mickey Mouse.  But it comes with great responsibility, as its use has far more consequences and bigger implications than we probably ever expected.  Here’s a peek at social media etiquette, or a code of behavior to follow when using these online platforms.

It’s important to be who you are.  Communicate in a honest, open manner, saying who you are, mentioning your affiliations, and being clear about your intentions.  Transparency applies whether one is in school, in the workplace, or dealing with life in general.  Never misrepresent your credentials, services or offerings, or education, to name a few.

Social media affords a great degree of anonymity, which can pose many problems once fraud, the intention to harm others, or deceit come in.  Treat others as you would like to be treated – think of the Golden Rule in every dealing or interaction on Facebook or Instagram.

Protect the identity of clients, partners, and other people online.  As a basic, protect the confidentiality and security of private data and records.  Don’t divulge private details unnecessarily, especially if they pertain to other individuals.  Seek permission at all times.  This applies to personal interactions, research or scholarly activities, or e-commerce activities.

While it is ethical to use social media sites to spread a specific message – something that you believe will benefit people or is a powerful cause – be careful about your approach.  Make sure it doesn’t discriminate against others’ race, religion, gender, or beliefs, and be as diplomatic as you can be.
